Marisa Toriggino is a preeminent yoga teacher who has more than three decades experience teaching yoga, training new practitioners and teachersand innovating in her own yoga practice while studying trends and developments as they emerge.
After her own pregnancies and watching how her pregnant students maintain their vitality and experience easier birth and faster postpartum recovery, Marisa developed her signature prenatal yoga program, The Prenatal Yoga Method™. Her method blends rich techniques she culled from diverse yoga lineages. The result: a sound yoga practice that supports a healthier pregnancy and better birth outcomes for future mothers. Marisa’s prenatal curriculum, which follows the guidelines of the American Medical Association’s Guide for Exercise During Pregnancy, is increasingly popular and used in yoga studios around the world. Practitioners praise the program for how it makes them feel supported and connected—to others and to themselves. Students discover that Marisa’s yoga classes provide a warm, nurturing and safe space to connect and build community around their pregnancy and growing family. Her students include pregnant women, birth professionals and educators from across the globe, including remote areas of Russia to urban centers in Europe and the Middle East. Marisa has studied with many of the founders of what is broadly known as modern postural yoga, including: BKS Iyengar and Geeta Iyengar (founders of Iyengar yoga), Sharon Gannon and David Life (founder of Jivamukthi Yoga), Dharma Mitra (founder Dharma Yoga Center), Yogi Bhajan (founder of Kundalini yoga), and Swami Kriyananda (direct disciple of Paramahansa Yogananda and founder of Ananda yoga).
She became a certified yoga instructor in 2000, and currently has the following credentials with Yoga Alliance: E-RYT® 200, RYT® 500, RPYT®, YACEP®. In 2008 she was among the first to write a prenatal yoga teacher training curriculum that was honored by Yoga Alliance. This allowed her to found a credentialed Prenatal Yoga School (PYS) and gives her students the opportunity to be Registered Prenatal Yoga Teachers (RPYT).
Marisa earned a BA from UC Berkeley; completed the UCSF Osher Center training in Mindfulness-Based Childbirth and Parenting Training for Health Professionals; is Certified by the Rudolf Steiner college in Administration for Spiritually-based Organizations; and is an active Member of the Association of Pre and Perinatal Psychology and Health (APPPAH) where she is also completing their Pre-Natal and Peri-Natal Educator (PPNE) Certificate Program.
